code: 003159 Title: When Program Analysis May (Or May Not) Solve Your Secu
rity ProblemsAbstract: Much security research deals with a needle rather d
ifficult to thread: designing security policies that are sufficiently robu
st and sensitive to capture the problem at hand but can also scale to comp
lex real-world software instances with good accuracy and performance. For
many software and systems security scenarios\, experience has shown that r
esorting to the proper program analysis can significantly improve either i
f not both dimensions. This observation is reflected somewhat by the remar
kable cross-fertilization that the communities of security\, software engi
neering\, and programming language research have experienced for program a
nalysis topics over the last decade. This talk will highlight how program a
nalysis has been the common denominator in my research activities for impr
oving heterogeneous security policies and systems. First\, we will cover s
pecial-purpose techniques for handling malicious software that shows a spl
it personality upon detecting potential analysis attempts. Then\, we will
discuss two scenarios where code analyses and transformations can make sof
tware intrinsically more secure. In one\, we will present compiler techniq
ues for removing micro-architectural side-channels from industry-grade cry
ptographic code. In the other\, we will show how program analyses can driv
e the work of fuzzing systems for software testing\, exposing them to exec
ution properties that they would otherwise overlook during bug searches. S
hort bio: Daniele Cono D'Elia obtained his Ph.D. in Engineering in Compute
r Science in 2016 from Sapienza University of Rome and is employed there a
s an Assistant Professor as of February 2022. His research work spans seve
ral fields of software and systems security\, studying how program analysi
s can boost accuracy and performance aspects of security policies. He co-a
uthored several publications in top-tier conferences and journals of his r
eference areas. He actively participates in his community as a TPC member
for those conferences and with other organizing and editorial roles. Thank
s to the practical ramifications of his work\, he often spoke at the Black
Hat Briefings of the cybersecurity industry.

\n \n\nBiografia: \n\n\n\n\nI am an Assistant Professor with the Depart
ment of Computer\, Control\, and Management Engineering (DIAG) 'Antonio Ru
berti' at Sapienza University of Rome. I am part of the research group led
by Leonardo Querzoni and of the CIS Sapienza Research Center of Cyber Int
elligence and Information Security.\n\n \n\nI obtained my PhD in 2016 with
a dissertation on adaptive program optimization later awarded and publish
ed as a book. In 2014 I was a visiting researcher at Purdue University wor
king with Jan Vitek.\n\n \n\nI often speak at Black Hat events (EU 2019\,
EU 2020\, USA 2021). I was also behind CyberChallenge.IT in its early days
. I'm a road cyclist and traveler. Please refer to my more up-to-date pers

\n\nInteressi di ricerca: \n\nMy work spans across several fields of softw
are and systems security. I play with malware\, monitoring solutions in pr
