terfaces: Toward a Daily Life EmploymentAbstractRecent publications in the
Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based passive brain–computer interface (pBCI)
field suggest that this technology could provide benefits in many operatio
nal environments\, in which an objective\, non intrusive\, measure of ment
al and emotional states of the user\, even in real time\, could be used to
prevent risky situations\, and more generally to enhance safety. This tec
hnology seems to be now ready to go outside the research labs and enter th
e market as a new consumer product. This assumption is supported by the re
cent advantages obtained in terms of front-end graphical user interfaces\,
back-end classification algorithms\, and technology improvement in terms
of wearable devices and dry EEG sensors. In this context\, the talk has th
e main objective to describe the methodological steps needed to design eff
ective passive BCI systems\, common pitfall to avoid\, and some use cases
and advancements achieved in the last 10 years of research\, both from a m
ethodological and technological point of view.BiosketchPietro Aricò receiv
ed his M.Sc. Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Sapienza University of
Rome in 2010 and a PhD in Bioengineering from University of Bologna Alma M
ater Studiorum in 2014. In 2016 he joined the Department of Molecular Medi
cine of the Sapienza University and the spin-off company BrainSigns\, in w
hich he is Chief Technology Officer and Project Manager. His research acti
vity has always been focused on one of the most innovative and fascinating
areas of bioengineering applied to neuroscience\, the brain-computer inte
rface (BCI)\, by focusing in particular to the development of advanced met
hodologies for the processing and classification of biosignals (i.e. Elect
 roencephalography\, Electrocardiogram\, Galvanic Skin Response)\, with the
purpose to assess mental and emotional states (e.g. workload\, attention\
, stress) of the user in out-of-the-labs applications (i.e. passive-BCI).
He participated in several national and international research projects\,
also as Principal Investigator\, funded by the Italian Ministry of Educati
 on\, Italian Ministry of Health\, 7th Framework Program and Horizon 2020 o
f the European Commission. Dr. Aricò is co-author of more than 40 scientif
ic articles in peer-reviewed international journals\, 1 patent and more th
an 50 scientific contributions in peer-reviewed national and international
conferences. He serves as reviewer for several peer-review journals\, he
is the Associate Editor for the International Journal of Bioelectromagneti
sm journal\, and Guest Editor within many special issues on international
journals\, such as Frontiers in Human Neuroscience and Brain Sciences.
